Seppeltsfield Cellar No. 7 South Australian Tawny

Seppeltsfield Cellar No. 7 South Australian Tawny

The season of gift giving is nigh upon us. If you?re looking for that little something special that will give you that warm fuzzy feeling when you hand it over, then a bottle of fortified wine is satisfaction guaranteed and is likely to recreate that same feeling for the person receiving your gift when they drink it.

A fortified wine from Australia?s world class Rutherglen wine region seems an obvious choice if the person you?re buying for loves a Port, Muscat or Tokay. Muscat and Tokay can truly be labelled as uniquely Australian ? no other fortified wines can offer the richness of these two fortified wines, with their extended ageing in barrels over many years, they adopt a flavour that must be tasted to be believed.

I?m sure you?ve all heard of Seppelts wines before haven?t you? Well, due to the sale of their entire fortified wine portfolio a year or two ago, their magnificent collection has now taken on a fresh new look and is known as Seppeltsfield ? the association harking back to its establishment in the Barossa in 1851.

This portfolio is a priceless collection of fortified wines that spans over 150 years of winemaking, with stocks dating back to 1878. The entry level range of Seppeltsfield fortifieds is as good as any I?ve seen at this price point and offers terrific value for money? for a last minute gift idea, or as a treat with the Christmas pudding, they make an excellent buy.

Seppeltsfield Cellar No. 6 Rutherglen Tokay $20
Rutherglen and Tokay go hand in hand and this example offers rich toffee and honey aromas on the nose that carry through to the lusciously sweet, rich, flavoursome palate while the naturally fresh acidity cleans up the long, unctuous finish. Tokay ? although as it is now to be known henceforth as Topaque ? is produced in the same manner as Muscat, yet is not as dark in colour as it is made from the white Muscadelle grape. Once again, Christmas cake or pudding would be an ideal accompaniment at this time of year, but Tokay is also extremely good with chocolate too!

Seppeltsfield Cellar No. 8 Rutherglen Muscat $20
Muscat is mainly made from the brown Muscat variety or Muscat au petit grains rouge to give it its correct name. It?s fermented, then fortified with brandy spirit, then aged in old oak barrels which results in the evaporation of the moisture content of the wine leaving behind a rich, dark syrupy liquid we know as liqueur Muscat ? fantastic served with Christmas pudding! A good example to try would be this ripper from Seppeltsfield ? super rich and raisiny, with good length.

Seppeltsfield Cellar No. 7 South Australian Tawny $20
A lighter, fresher, more modern style of Port ? or Tawny, as its named these days ? that has lovely rich fruit notes and good length of flavour on the finish. Sourced from some of South Australia?s premier wine growing regions this is a bargain for the price? try it with a mince tart or two (or any tart for that matter).
