Video: 2 deaths, thousands without power in Connecticut

>> is calling this the worst water event in his state's history. nbc's katy tur is in stonington, connecticut this morning. what's the scene there.

>> reporter: thousands trapped but could have been so much worse without the mandatory evacuations. luckily a number of people did get out. we do have to report two deaths for you this morning. one was a woman in mansfield. a tree fell on her house. we're told that she was electrocuted when power lines came down with it. also a couple of injuries in that house, but they were not life-threatening, as well as a fifthner eaton, connecticut , who was driving when a tree fell on his car. right now the weather has certainly calmed down here. there's not so many reports about what's coming out of this state right now, because there are so many people here without power. 635,000 customers without power right now. that's because of flooding. that's because of high winds . it's also because of massive trees like the one you're seeing behind me. if we come back out here live, can you see this tree is huge. it's fallen on to this house. this is just one of many trees across the stonington area and across the state that are bringing down power lines . they are blocking roads and making things very dangerous this morning. we are in the east part of connecticut . we're told it got much worse over in the west part of concorporation and i'm sure you'll be able to ask governor malloy more about that as you talk to him right now. guys.

(AP) ? Learning how to play tennis is hard enough. Now try it when you can't see.

That's what students are doing at the California School for the Blind. They're learning a form of tennis adapted for the visually impaired ? and expanding the boundaries of what the blind can do.

The state-supported campus in Fremont is one of three American schools for the blind that recently began teaching adapted tennis, which was invented in Japan in the 1980s. A nonprofit group called Tennis Serves is working to promote the sport throughout the U.S.

"I didn't know someone with no vision could play tennis until I came to this school," said a 16-year-old student from Modesto named Jonathan. The school declined to provide his last name, citing a state law that protects the privacy of students with disabilities.

Blind tennis features a smaller court, lower net and junior tennis rackets with bigger heads and shorter handles. String is taped to the floor so players can feel the boundaries with their feet.

Players use a foam ball filled with metal beads that rattle on impact, allowing them to locate the ball when it hits the ground or racket. Once served, they have to return the ball before it bounces three times.

"The most difficult thing to teach is timing their stroke," said Sejal Vallabh, the 17-year-old founder of Tennis Serves. "Being able to listen to the ball, locate it using their sense of hearing and swing at the precise moment the ball goes by is really difficult to teach."

While experienced players can keep the ball in bounds and stage extended rallies, just hitting the ball over the net can be a challenge for beginners. During a recent visit to the California School for the Blind, students mostly swatted balls into the ground, the net and toward the ceiling and walls. Few balls were returned, but teachers say some are developing that capability.

Blind tennis was created in 1984 by Miyoshi Takei, a blind Japanese high school student who designed the adapted ball and helped the sport gain popularity in Japan and other Asian countries. He dominated blind tennis competitions until he was killed in a train accident last year at age 42.

Vallahb, an avid tennis player who is now a high school senior in Newton, Mass., first encountered blind tennis two years while doing a summer internship in Japan, where her grandmother lives.

"After I saw it there, I knew that I wanted to recreate the sport that I had seen back in the U.S.," she said, so she started Tennis Serves.

Vallabh first began teaching at Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, Mass. with help from her high school tennis teammates. She then helped start similar programs at Lighthouse International in New York City and the California School for the Blind.

Vallabh is working with engineering students at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, Calif. to design a ball that continuously beeps to make it easier for blind players to track it.

At the California School for the Blind, staff members said they were skeptical when Vallabh first approached them about teaching the adapted sport.

"We were thinking, 'How are we going to teach tennis?" said Mary Alice Ross, who teaches adapted physical education. "My colleague said, 'Tennis is like teaching football. It's not something we really do.'"

The California School for the Blind, which has about 90 students ages 5 to 22, offers many adapted sports activities and sports, including bowling, boating, swimming, hiking, ice-skating and goal-ball.

Tennis is one of the most difficult sports for the visually impaired, but it brings unique rewards, teachers say.

"When it comes to being able to play a sport which is commonly only played by people with good vision, it's a big self-esteem boost." said John Healy, a dorm counselor who teaches adapted tennis.

A 12-year-old student named Sebastian said he was surprised when he first heard about the adapted sport.

"Tennis? How could blind people play tennis?" he said. "But then I was like, blind people can do anything they want. If you set your mind to it, then you can do it."

Chewing betel quid exposes half a billion people to direct carcinogens

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Chewing betel quid -- the fourth most popular psychoactive substance in the world after tobacco, alcohol and caffeine -- exposes its 600 million users to substances that act as direct carcinogens in the mouth, scientists are reporting in a new study. It appears in ACS' journal Chemical Research in Toxicology.

Mu-Rong Chao and Chiung-Wen Hu explain that betel quid (BQ) consists of nuts from the arcea tree, sometimes combined with spices, such as cardamom or saffron, and other ingredients. Available in commercial forms, BQ is popular among people in China, India and other Asian countries, and people of Asian heritage living in the U.S. and other countries. Scientists have known for decades that chewing BQ can lead to oral cancer, and showed recently that the substances in BQ could be changed into carcinogens in the body. The authors of this study explored whether there were any substances in the arcea nut that can cause cancer directly, without any need for the body to change or "activate" them.

They discovered that compounds in the arcea nut can "alkylate" the genetic material DNA, causing changes that increase the risk of cancer, and they are present in betel quid in amounts high enough to do so. "Our study showed that these alkylating agents are present at levels sufficient to cause DNA damage and could potentially have adverse implications to human health, particularly in the case of the development of oral cancer for BQ chewers," they say.

The authors acknowledge funding from the National Science Council, Taiwan.

Apple takes on Nexus 7 with iPad Mini

Android Central

In San Francisco this afternoon Apple revealed a new 7.9-inch iPad Mini, based upon the internals of the iPad 2, to an audience of feverish fans. But from an Android perspective, what's most interesting is the stage time given to Google's $199 Nexus 7, which has already seen success in the small form factor tablet space. The Nexus 7 stayed on screen for several minutes while Apple's Phil Schiller took jabs at the device.

Showing the two tablets side-by-side, the Apple VP played up the iPad Mini's advantages in materials, screen size and tablet app ecosystem. However, Apple didn't venture anywhere near Google's tablet when it came to price -- the cheapest iPad Mini, a 16GB Wifi-only model, is to sell for $329.99 in the U.S.

Google is widely expected to expand its tablet portfolio next week, with a 32GB Nexus 7 and a new Samsung-built 10-incher, with a 2560x1600 display.

Apple also unveiled a fourth-generation retina iPad, along with new MacBook, Mac Mini and iMac computers.

Newest Cicilline TV ad hits back at GOP on his legal career

October 23rd, 2012 at 10:44 am by Ted Nesi under Nesi's Notes, On the Main Site

The air war continues in Rhode Island?s 1st Congressional District.

Democratic Congressman David Cicilline debuted a new television commercial on Tuesday morning called ?Outrageous? that pushes back on charges his Republican challenger Brendan Doherty made in the tough ?No Surprises? spot that began running last week. Cicilline?s new ad was apparently finished in the last 24 hours: it quotes a Monday Roll Call article saying ?Republicans have gone nuclear on Rep. David Cicilline.?

?When it?s time to push that button, we?ve seen campaigns take one of two tactics: a testimonial from a sexual assault victim criticizing the opposition candidate, or, as in this case, both Republican and Democratic candidates have accused each other of harboring sympathies for pedophiles,? Roll Call?s Abby Livingston wrote in an analysis of Doherty?s latest ad.

A Republican source said Cicilline?s campaign is spending $162,000 on TV commercial time from Tuesday through Sunday. Cicilline?s spokeswoman declined to comment on the record. The new ad is a coordinated buy partly paid for by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

In an email to supporters Tuesday, Cicilline campaign manager Eric Hyers blasted the Republican attacks as ?vile.? He also said the company raised significantly more in recent days than the $40,000 goal set by Cicilline in an email appeal he sent supporters last week.

Doherty has reserved $202,000 in TV advertising time for the final two weeks of the race, but campaign manager Ian Prior said last week Doherty will increase that if the Republican beats his fundraising goals. Federal filings show the National Right to Life PAC spent $3,544 on a mailer backing Doherty.

A WPRI 12 poll last month showed Cicilline at 44%, followed by Doherty at 38% and independent David Vogel at 6%, with 10% of voters still undecided. Doherty had more than twice as much cash as Cicilline on Sept. 30. The candidates debated live for the first time a week ago on WPRI 12.

Looking at the different types of business insurance

Insurance is something that every business needs as it is important in protecting both your company and yourself, and is also a legal requirement. But there are so many different types of insurance out there that it can be difficult to figure out what you need. Here is a guide to some of the different types of business insurance that are available.

Property insurance

Both the property that your business is on and the contents of the property are protected by this type of insurance. That means that if you own a store, your stock is covered. If your business is an office, your office equipment is covered. Both the physical location and the contents within it are protected against loss or damage.

Business interruption insurance

If the building your company is in was damaged or an essential piece of machinery was stolen, you might have to shut down for a few days. While property insurance will cover the damage, it won't cover the losses you incur as a result of the business being closed. Business interruption insurance will cover this loss in profits.

Comprehensive general liability

This type of business insurance provides coverage for the injury or property damage of other people. For example, if a customer is injured on your property, comprehensive general liability will cover the damages.

Errors and omissions insurance

If you or someone who works for you makes a mistake that causes damage to a client, this type of business insurance will cover the losses. This could be anything from the client being physically harmed to them losing a sum of money due to the error.

Workers compensation

In most states, it is required by law that all business owners who have employees pay for workers compensation. With this type of insurance, you are covered if one of your employees is injured while working. Such business insurance policy will award them compensation, and your employee cannot sue you for damages.

Health insurance

This type of insurance helps pay for the medical expenses of you and your employees. While it is not required that you purchase this type of insurance, it is usually recommended. Not only does it keep you and your employees protected, but it keeps you afloat in a competitive marketplace; many people will not work for a company that does not provide health insurance.

Wine and Candy Match of the Week

The following post is sponsored by Gnarly Head Wines. Each week, leading up to October 31, we?ll be matching one of their varietals with a classic Halloween candy. After all, you?re going to need a game plan to get rid of the leftovers after the trick-or-treaters have gone home (or for raiding your little darlings? take when they?ve gone to bed!) And Gnarly Head wines are just right for getting you in the Halloween ?spirits? (pun intended).?

Pinot noir is one of those wines that go with a wide variety of foods?if you?re out with a group for dinner, it?s the one you should go for when people are ordering both salmon and lamb chops.

Gnarly Head?s Pinot Noir is chockablock with dry dusty cherry, cranberry, savory herbal goodness?but Thanksgiving is still a month away, dammit. The candy ain?t going to last that long. And if you?re doing it right, neither will the wine.

Pinot noir is generally low in tannins; tannins are a naturally-occurring compound in grape skins that help give wine its age-worthiness. But if you?re impatient like me and don?t want to wait five or more years to drink your happy juice, you?ll know tannins by the way they make your mouth feel like it?s covered in suede or you?ve just eaten velvet?after drinking wine. Very tannic wines tend to be cabernets (both sauvignon and franc) and malbec. Ever eat walnuts and have a dry mouth afterward? Yep, there are tannins in walnuts too, especially the skins.

So you don?t want chocolate with nuts. And plain milk chocolate falls flat against the pinot. But milk chocolate with a crispy crunch? Oh, yes.? Whoppers Malted Milk Balls, all the way. The dry maltiness stands up well to the plush, lush fruit, resulting in a flavor sensation reminiscent of chocolate cherry cheesecake. Without all those pesky inconvenient calories.

iOS 6 adoption rate over 60% in US and Canada

After one month of availability, Apple's iOS 6 has been installed on 60 percent of iDevices in the U.S. and Canada, and will possibly see further growth with the expected debut of a 7.85-inch "iPad mini" on Tuesday.

Ad network Chitika's research arm, Chitika Insights,
iOS 6 showed substantial adoption rates when the mobile operating system was first released on Sept. 19, and at one point represented over 16 percent of all iOS device web traffic after being available for only one day. Since Oct. 2, iOS 6 gained another 10 percent share, though adoption rates have fallen since the operating system debuted.

The ad network notes that while growth has leveled off over the past week, the number of iOS 6 users continues to increase thanks to upgrades and new device purchases. Chitika expects usage to touch 70 percent within the coming weeks, spurred on by sales of Apple's much-rumored iPad mini.

Apple is widely expected to debut the small form factor iPad at a special event on Tuesday, which is thought to focus on educational uses for the rumored 7.85-inch tablet.

No jail time in first sentence for FAMU hazing death

Red Huber / Orlando Sentinel

Brian Jones looks to the court gallery before being sentenced in an Orlando courtroom for his role in the hazing death of a Florida A&M University band member on Monday.

By Kari Huus, NBC News

The first of 12 defendants in the deadly hazing case of Florida A&M drum major Robert Champion was sentenced by an Orlando court on Monday.

Brian Jones, 23, avoided a jail term, but was sentenced to six months of community supervision ? a strict monitoring arragement?that requires an ankle monitor and frequent check-ins with probation officials ? followed by two years of probation. He is also required to do 200 hours of community service, The Associated Press reported.

The band had traveled to Orlando from Tallahassee to perform at a football game when the fellow band members subjected Champion to a severe beating on the bus ? in a ritual called "crossing Bus C" ? which caused him to fall unconscious, and then die, on Nov. 19, 2011.

?

Jones, a percussionist, faced up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. But the judge said Jones? role had been relatively limited.

"This young man's part in this horrible act ... as compared with many others from what I've seen is minimal," said Judge Marc Lubet, ruling in?Orange County Court. "It was an isolated incident in this man's life for which he's shown remorse."

Lubet quoted Abraham Lincoln as he announced the sentence, saying that "mercy bears richer fruit than strict justice," the Orlando Sentinel reported.

After initially pleading not guilty, Jones entered a no-contest plea Oct. 9 to a third-degree felony hazing charge.

Champion?s parents attended Monday's court proceedings. Prior to the sentencing, his mother challenged the idea that Jones? role had been minor:

"You and I know that's not true," said Pam Champion, addressing Jones, and carrying a picture of her son. "You played a critical role."

"You won't be able to put it out if your mind...It will haunt you," she told Jones.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

iPad Lightning Port - Business Insider

The photo below comes to us from Apple.Pro via 9to5Mac and it shows two iPads?with the usual dock port we're accustomed to and another with the smaller Lightning port that Apple introduced with the iPhone 5.

If genuine, then it suggests that the iPad could be in line for a big makeover that'll render your old sync cables useless without a $30 adapter.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga.: Golf Capsules | National Sports | Rock ...

? Davis Love III might have found the perfect tonic for any Ryder Cup hangover - playing golf, and playing well on a Sea Island course he knows better than anyone.

In his third straight tournament since his U.S. team lost a big lead on the final day at Medinah, Love hit a 6-iron to 3 feet on the 17th hole that put him in the final group going into the weekend at the McGladrey Classic, where he is becoming more than just a tournament host.

Love was one shot behind Arjun Atwal, who is running out of time to keep his PGA Tour card. Atwal made an adjustment in his putting stroke earlier in the week and watched it pay off in a big way at Sea Island for a 63, his best score of the year.

Atwal, whose two-year exemption from winning in Greensboro, N.C., expires this year, is No. 175 on the money list and has only two tournaments left to finish in the top 125. He opened with three straight birdies and took the outright lead with a wedge into 5 feet on the fifth hole, his 14th of the round.

Atwal was at 10-under 130, though this tournament has a distinct Ryder Cup feel going into the final two days. It starts with Love, the American captain, who moved to Sea Island when he was 14.

Love was tied with Jim Furyk, who hasn't played since his bogey-bogey finish in the Ryder Cup and is making his final PGA Tour appearance of the year. Furyk was plodding along Sea Island, a few birdies on his card, when he rolled in an 18-foot birdie putt on the 14th, converted a two-putt birdie from 100 feet away just off the green, and made a third straight birdie on the 16th from about 12 feet. He wound up with a 65.

David Toms was tied with them until he made bogey on the final hole for a 67, though he was still only two shots out of the lead. Bud Cauley, who shared the first-round lead, wasn't as crisp with his irons and had to settle for a 70. He also was two behind, still in great shape as he pursues his first PGA Tour win. Gavin Coles joined them at 132 after six birdies in a round of 65.

HANABANK CHAMPIONSHIP

INCHEON, South Korea (AP) - Norway's Suzann Pettersen shot a course-record 9-under 63 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the LPGA Tour's HanaBank Championship.

Pettersen birdied five of her first six holes and nine of the first 15 on Sky 72 Golf Club's Ocean Course. She won the tournament in 2007.

Sweden's Karin Sjodin opened with a 65, and South Korea's So Yeon Ryu, Moon Hyun-hee and Kim Ha-neul were three strokes back at 66 along with Japan's Ai Miyazato and Spain's Azahara Munoz.

Top-ranked Yani Tseng had a 67. Michelle Wie and Cheyenne Woods shot 73.

PERTH INTERNATIONAL

PERTH, Australia (AP) - Argentina's Emiliano Grillo moved closer to securing his European Tour card for next season, shooting a 5-under 67 to take a four-stroke lead in the Perth International.

The 20-year-old Grillo had two eagles and two birdies at Lake Karrinyup to finish at 11-under 133.

American Bo Van Pelt and Australia's Jason Scrivener were tied for second. Van Pelt had a 67, and Scrivener shot a 69. American Jason Duffner was another stroke back after a 67.

South Africa's Charl Schwartzel missed the cut with rounds of 71 and 76.

Inaugural Global Green Inclusive Innovation Summit Aims to Empower

By Carol Dreibelbis

For the first time ever, governments, businesses, multilateral organizations, NGOs, academics, and investors will come together to discuss green, inclusive businesses at the Global Green Inclusive Innovation (G2i2) Summit. The G2i2 Summit will take place from October 25 to 26, 2012 at Infosys Technologies? campus in Bangalore, India. In the spirit of global participation, the Summit?s location will rotate around the globe in future years.

G2i2 Summit organizers hope to address climate change, reduce poverty, and improve the social impact of business. (Photo credit: www.g2i2summit.com)

The G2i2 Summit will focus on accelerating the spread of innovative green and inclusive businesses around the world. A ?green? business can be defined as one that demonstrates an explicit concern for the environment and does not negatively impact the local or global environment, community, or economy. A business is defined as ?inclusive? when it aims to benefit low-income or other disadvantaged communities; businesses do this by actively including these communities in the business process, whether through job creation, offering affordable goods and services, or other means. While green and inclusive businesses may be either for-profit or non-profit in nature, they ultimately aim to do good through business.

By bringing together representatives from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, the G2i2 Summit aims to both foster innovative green, inclusive business partnerships and match these partnerships with funders. According to the G2i2 Summit website, ?New green and inclusive businesses not only need desirable green products or guaranteed markets from companies; but also funding from public and private sector sources, social and infrastructure support from governments, on-going business and technical training from multi-laterals; and local market knowledge from NGOs and academia.?

The G2i2 Summit will feature keynote speeches by Mr. Jairam Ramesh, Honorable Minister for Rural Development of India; Professor Rajeev Gowda, chairperson of the Center for Public Policy at the Indian Institute of Management; and NS Raghavan, co-founder of Infosys Technologies, a global consulting and IT services company based in India. The agenda will also include special pitch sessions for green and inclusive businesses aiming to scale or replicate in India and around the world.

One concrete outcome of the G2i2 Summit will be the launch of several innovative, green and inclusive businesses related to sustainable food, clean energy, water, waste management, and health in the following target countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Vietnam. Various companies, governments, and organizations are in support of this goal, including the UN Global Compact; multinational corporations Unilever, Novozymes, Nokia, and Greif; and the governments of the United States, Germany, South Africa, Sweden, and New Zealand.

By connecting companies and governments with complementary green, inclusive initiatives, G2i2 Summit organizers hope to address climate change, reduce poverty, and improve the social impact of business. Visit the G2i2 Summit website for more information.

How have you seen businesses have a positive impact on your community? Please share with us in the comments section.

Communications Workers of America activists and some American ...

Communications Workers of America activists and some American Airlines? workers today are handing out leaflets to passengers at 15 U.S. airports, including the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, to voice their growing concern about the carrier outsourcing work.

Leafleting was scheduled to start at 10 a.m. at the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport?s Terminal D outside the American ticket counter.

American?s?airport agents filed for a union representation election more than 10 months ago. CWA has sought to represent those roughly 10,000 American workers.

Two weeks ago, a federal appeals court ruled that a lower court should not have blocked a union election by American passenger service agents.

The appeals court decision cleared the way for the National Mediation Board to proceed with an election of the nearly 10,000 airport and reservations agents, which are the largest group of employees at American not represented by a union.
