Groupon revises results to boost refund reserves

Groupon Inc. revised its fourth-quarter results after finding it needed to increase the amount of money it sets aside for refunds.

Groupon said Friday that it was selling online deals at higher prices during the period and that put it on the hook for larger refunds. The adjustment lowered the company's revenue for the period by $14.3 million.

It wasn't a good sign for Groupon as this was its first quarterly report since it went public in November.

The company's auditor Ernst & Young also flagged a weakness in the Groupon's internal controls over its financial statement. The Chicago company says it is working to address the underlying causes.

Groupon stood by its first-quarter guidance. Its shares plunged in after-hours trading on the news.

No-Hassle Systems Of PPC Advertising Online - Web Marketing ...

One of the things that attracts so many businesses to PPC advertising is because it is instant; has targeted traffic and simply works well if the campaign is competently put together. Google has made it more difficult for a lot of businesses to do PPC advertising, but you can work within their policies and still do very well. You can be on the first page of Google with your PPC ads with terrible copy or great copy ? it is up to you. There is no substitute for PPC ad copy that just devastates the competition, and you will know you have arrived when other advertisers start swiping your copy.

Two extremely important concerns with PPC are your CTR and CPC ? click through rates and cost per click.

One possible method is making use of brand names, but we have to warn you that is not always possible. For more general terms, using a brand name in your ad copy will help to an extent, but it always pays to include more information about your offer, so that your prospects aren?t left confused or misinformed.

You have the same tools at your disposal as the rest, and we will tell you to write strong headlines but avoid making them written with hype.

If you want your target audience to take notice of it then you should be ready to use some catchy phrases in your ad copy and make it look attractive. The more you focus on these two factors and balance them out, the better will be the results that you derive from your campaign. Once you learn more about writing short copy, you will see that there is not a tremendous amount to learn but it is necessary. Look at understanding New York Cable T V Promotions for well-rounded news.

Let?s face it, there?s no perfect ad copy creation formula that will help you create that amazing ad copy that gets you lots of clicks. You will need to use split testing methods for optimizing conversions and just about anything else you can think of that may give you an edge.

Most experienced PPC advertisers do heavy testing with the headline because that has a greater impact on overall conversions. Later on, you can take the most successful ads and then tweak them some more to improve your CTR to get more targeted visitors. Nothing will ever work unless you take action on it, and obviously you will need to do these things and more if you want to succeed with PPC advertising. The benefits to being willing to do the work and take the time will just make you a better business person all around. If you can dedicate enough time to practice and take calculated risks, there?s no reason as to why you can?t make your PPC campaign a success.

Mo Lawal apologizes for tweet about Nevada commissioner

On "No Holds Barred" radio and later in a video with CSN Bay Area, Mo Lawal apologized to Nevada Athletic Commissioner Pat Lundvall for calling her a slur for women on his Twitter account.

"I was out of line for calling the woman the 'b' word and I was wrong for that," Lawal told CSN California. "I was kind of mad about the comments, I was offended by the comments made towards me and I was out of line. I was too emotional. I apologize for that. With that being said, I still feel that I was offended, but I'm in the wrong for what I said."

Lawal has not changed his stance on Lundvall's tone towards him. In the end, it does not matter if anyone else but Lawal found her questioning racist, because it was directed at Lawal. Based on his experiences in his life, he found it to be racist and was offended, and he has a right to feel that way. Lashing out against Lundvall with that language wasn't the best move, which is why he apologized.

Apologizing was a smart thing for Lawal to do because he can now move on from this incident. It won't continue to hang over his head as he continues to rehabilitate from knee surgery and a life-threatening staph infection.

Islamist draws crowds in Egypt election campaign

CAIRO (Reuters) - A sheikh who blends hardline Islamism with revolutionary zeal is emerging as a frontrunner in the race for the Egyptian presidency, buoyed by a popular touch which even his critics say is striking a chord with many voters.

Hazem Salah Abu Ismail's message has moved from the mosque to the masses in the year since Hosni Mubarak was swept from power, helped by a campaign which to date appears one of the best funded. His posters are everywhere, put up by dedicated supporters to whom he is both a celebrity and visionary.

"This man knows how to speak to people in their own language," said Aladin Nounou, a factory owner who says most of his 600 workers count themselves as Abu Ismail admirers.

A lawyer by profession, Abu Ismail got a warm reception from thousands of adoring students at a Cairo University rally on Tuesday. A day later, there was another big turnout in Mansoura, a Nile Delta city north of the capital.

To liberals, leftists and others worried by the rise of Islamist influence in the post-Mubarak Egypt, the prominence of a man committed to a tighter application of Islamic law is yet another cause for concern about the direction of the country of 80 million. Islamist parties already dominate the parliament.

Analysts who discounted him a few months ago believe that Abu Ismail could make it to the second round of the election, foreseeing a run-off that might pit him against former Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, a liberal nationalist, or another of the candidates.

With the long beard of a Salafi Muslim, softly-spoken Abu Ismail is finding supporters among Egyptians who voted for both the Muslim Brotherhood and the ultraconservative Nour Party in the legislative elections. Together, they won two thirds of the parliament.

To date, neither has decided to field their own candidate for the presidency, though the Brotherhood is reviewing a previous decision not to run. Trying to project a moderate image, the group has distanced itself from the Salafis.

Abu Ismail is the most hardline of a group of independent Islamists running in the May election. He is campaigning under the slogan "We will live in dignity" - a statement splashed in conservative blue across T-shirts worn by his supporters.

FUNDING QUESTIONS

While he has said there should be no quick application of strict Islamic codes, his program says a Muslim ruler should work towards applying widely-accepted elements of the sharia, for example, by prohibiting alcohol - a step that could have a deep impact on an economy heavily dependent on tourism.

Abu Ismail's critics have gone online in an effort to undermine his credibility. He has been the focus of hundreds of irreverent jokes on the web.

There are also allegations - denied by his supporters - that Abu Ismail's funding is coming from the Gulf and that he is manipulating religious sentiment for political gain.

"There is something that is unequal," said a worker from a rival campaign. "The kind of money he is spending all over the country, the advertising, the fliers, the posters. We have no idea where his funding is coming from."

Abu Ismail does not shy away from controversy. In an interview with a religious TV channel posted on Youtube last year, he said he and al Qaeda shared the same goal - an apparent reference to an Islamic state - though he added that the militant network that advocates global jihad was "mistaken".

His supporters cite charisma, composure and an unambiguous commitment to religious law as some of his assets. "He is truly a sincere person," said Ahmed al-Sayed, a 21-year old engineering student who voted for the Brotherhood in the legislative election but is now campaigning for Abu Ismail.

"That mixture of charisma and Islamic law is something that is appealing. Nobody else is really offering that," said Shadi Hamid, an expert on Islamist movements at the Brookings Institute in Doha. "There is a place for right-wing populism."

In southern Egypt, Abu Ismail posters have been plastered to wells in villages that are hard to find on the map and near ancient Pharaonic temples. In one village, two of his admirers, both women, made no mention of his Islamist credentials but said they liked his soft tone and believed he had the patience to fix the country.

Abu Ismail's appearance at Cairo University on Tuesday offered a glimpse of the popularity he enjoys. Thousands of students squeezed into an auditorium to hear him speak, packing the aisles. Some perched precariously on window ledges.

"The people want Hazem Abu Ismail," they chanted, stamping their feet in unison and unleashing a deafening cheer as he took to the stage. Dozens of campaign workers formed a human chain to hold back crowd surges. At least one attendee fainted.

Jostled by supporters as he took his seat, a beaming Abu Ismail spoke for more than an hour, explaining how the country of 80 million had been held back intentionally, all the while maintaining the calm tone seen as one element of his appeal.

The economy had been forced into an over reliance on tourism to make it subservient to foreigners, he said, though he pledged to expand the industry's income eight-fold.

"WE ARE NOT A WEAK NATION"

Dressed in a suit and tie, he alleged that both United States and Israel were seeking to subvert the presidential election to their own ends and cited Iran as a model of a state that had shaken off U.S. influence to stand on its own feet.

He did, however, quickly point out his doctrinal differences with the Shi'ite Islam espoused by its theocratic government.

"The time has come, and hear these words clearly, for us to find the elements of our strength inside our country," he said, triggering chants of "Where are the journalists? The president is here".

"We are not a weak nation," he said.

"By attacking those who are perceived as our victimizers, he hits a favorable chord with his audience," said Mustapha Kamel Al-Sayyid, a professor of political science at Cairo University. "He speaks in a very soft way, using a language that is quite appealing to the Egyptian people."

At 50, Abu Ismail is one of the younger of the frontrunners for the presidency. Moussa is 75. Others include Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh, another independent Islamist who was expelled from the Brotherhood last year for deciding to run against it wishes.

Authorities charges JetBlue pilot for midair meltdown

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Authorities filed criminal charges on Wednesday against a JetBlue Airways pilot who witnesses said yelled incoherently about religion and the 2001 hijack attacks and pounded on a locked cockpit door before passengers subdued him in a midair uproar.

Flight 191 was diverted to Amarillo, Texas, on Tuesday, following what authorities described as erratic behavior by Capt. Clayton Frederick Osbon, who allegedly ran through the cabin before passengers tackled him in the galley.

A flight attendant suffered bruised ribs, officials said.

The Justice Department filed a complaint charging Osbon with interfering with the crew. It is unusual for a commercial airline pilot to be charged in this way, and a U.S. official said he could not recall a similar case in recent years.

Osbon, 49, remains in a guarded facility at a hospital in Amarillo, and U.S. Attorney Sarah Saldana said he faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

The 12-year JetBlue veteran was suspended while the FBI and aviation authorities investigate the incident, the airline and the government said on Wednesday.

A JetBlue spokeswoman said the company was cooperating fully with authorities and would conduct its on investigation as well.

Dave Barger, chief executive of the New York carrier, said he knows and respects Osbon, who regulators said underwent a routine medical evaluation nearly four months ago and had a clean record.

The harrowing events raised questions about pilot medical qualifications and workplace stress in an industry under chronic financial pressure and more generally in an economy only slowly shaking the grip of severe recession.

TROUBLE IN THE COCKPIT

An affidavit by an FBI agent shows trouble for the flight started before the Airbus A320 took off from New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport enroute to Las Vegas with 141 passengers and crew.

Osbon was late arriving at the airport, and missed the routine pre-flight crew briefing, agent John Whitworth said in the affidavit. Whitworth said problems continued as the plane took off.

"Osbon talked about his church and needed to focus," Whitworth said in the affidavit. "Osbon began talking about religion, but his statements were not coherent."

The copilot grew nervous when Osbon told them that "things just don't matter" and began yelling over the plane's radio system, telling air traffic controllers to "be quiet," according to Whitworth's account in the affidavit. "The First Officer became really worried when Osbon said, ?We need to take a leap of faith'," Whitworth said in the document. "Osbon started trying to correlate completely unrelated numbers and he talked about the sins in Las Vegas. At one point, Osbon told the (first officer), ?We're not going to Vegas,' and began giving what was described as a sermon."

CHAOS IN THE CABIN

Passengers who were on the plane described a chaotic mid-flight scene in which a man in a JetBlue uniform, apparently locked out of the cockpit, began banging on the door and demanding to be let inside. Passengers subdued him.

"People behind me, a bunch of big guys, started going up there and trying to help, and we found out that the guy banging was actually the pilot, and he was trying to get into the cockpit because the other co-pilot had locked him out," passenger Grant Heppes told Reuters.

"Everybody seemed pretty nervous," he said. "Nobody was sure what was going on. Everybody seemed very concerned."

Osbon yelled jumbled comments about "Jesus, September 11th, Iraq, Iran and terrorists" while passengers converged on him, the affidavit said.

An off-duty pilot aboard the plane took Osbon's place at the controls as the plane made an emergency landing.

Barger said there had been no earlier signs of problems with the pilot.

"I've known the captain personally for a long period of time, and there's been no indication of this at all," Barger told NBC, adding that the pilot was a "consummate professional."

The incident was the second to involve erratic behavior by a JetBlue crew member since August 2010, when a flight attendant upset after an altercation with a passenger bolted from a plane by deploying and sliding down the inflatable emergency chute.

Lawyers for the flight attendant in that incident, Steven Slater, later told reporters he had acted in part out of frustration with the chaos of air travel and that he was under stress because his mother was suffering from lung cancer.

The incident also came just two weeks after a female flight attendant started ranting about a possible crash over the public address system of an American Airlines plane. She, too, was subdued by passengers and crew as the plane returned to the gate at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

FITNESS FOR DUTY

The FAA said it was investigating the JetBlue incident. It is not yet known what may have caused the outbursts described in the affidavit, officials said.

As a captain, he would be required to undergo at least two medical exams within the past year to assess his capabilities to fly.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Osbon's last medical check was in December and there were no prior incidents, accidents or disciplinary actions on his record.

But the physicals required by FAA and conducted annually for most and twice a year in other cases are generally less rigorous than those required by big airlines when first hiring a pilot.

Doctors must rely on self disclosure by a pilot on questionnaires about any mental health issues.

JetBlue said it has a peer-assistance for pilots and added that crewmembers could take "safety time out" should an employee have any issues.

The FAA handles more than 450,000 applications annually for medical certifications, mainly for private flying, agency records show. It would not make a medical official available for an interview.

JetBlue said it was in compliance with FAA regulations on pilot health.

Although the incident aboard the JetBlue flight was a rarity, pilots say their jobs have become more stressful over the years due to carrier financial and other demands.

"Airline pilots are among the most scrutinized professionals there are, way more than doctors. ... We're constantly under the microscope," retired U.S. Airways pilot Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III, famous for landing his stricken jet in the Hudson River in 2009, said in a telephone interview.

JetBlue has one of the industry's more upbeat corporate cultures, which emphasizes premium customer service. Management has good labor relations with its non-union workers who staff mostly newer Airbus jets.

But JetBlue has twice made sensational headlines for lengthy tarmac delays, calling into question its operating decisions in the worst weather.

Joyce Hunter, a former account manager with a major airline who is now an associate professor at Saint Xavier University in Chicago, said pilots and flight attendants should have annual evaluations for stress.

"This is the issue from the vantage point of why we're seeing these meltdowns," said Hunter, who wrote a book titled "Anger in the Air."

Top Tips To Quickly Improve Your Article Marketing | Le Marketeer

Create an e-book once you have created several articles on the same topic; this is a fabulous promotional tool. People are very protective of their email addresses. If you can offer them a free bonus like the eBook for signing up for your emails, that eBook becomes a great tool in your marketing toolbox.

One way to maximize the effectiveness of your article marketing is to trade links on social media sites. Articles that are ?liked? or get blog mentions are generally read more often, than those that don?t get such attention. Look into some of the many sources online that gather how much attention an article is getting. This will only help you in figuring out how your articles are being received.

Avoid using phrases such as ?in conclusion? or ?finally? in your closing paragraph. You don?t want the readers to know too early that they?ve reached the end of your content; it will make them more likely to move on prematurely. Prepare your article summary as usual in the final paragraph, simply leaving those words out. Having an interesting conclusion will make them finish the article and see the part where they can find more things written by you.

The best goals are time-bound, and this applies to article-writing goals, as well. You will fuel your motivation and accomplish more work. As an added bonus, each article written will increase the views your site will get; therefore, it is advisable to submit new information weekly.

Do your homework on the rules of the article directory. Each directory has its own set of rules and submission criteria.

Paying someone to distribute your articles can help you get more attention. An article distribution service will send your article to many directories, saving you time and effort. They cost money, though, and you should calculate whether the money spent is worth the added exposure.

Generally speaking, your articles are accessible on the web for an indefinite amount of time. Consequently, there is always the possibility that they will continue to drive traffic to some degree. You can rapidly expand your customer base by promoting one article from another one of your articles.

Promote one article with another of your articles. One handy trick is to link to past articles whenever you write a new piece. This is an acceptable practice when you give advice or provide helpful information. It is okay to praise your good work.

As said earlier, you can make gains in growing your business and increasing traffic to your site with article marketing. You can totally transform your business if you know how to properly use article marketing.

Marketing is very important for any business. It can make the difference between success and failure. Would you invest thousands on getting your business off the ground, developing your products and services, getting the right staff and infrastructure and let it fail due to lack of marketing?

It does not matter whether your business is a one-person-business or a large multi-national, it is important to get the word out. Ultimately, more leads mean more customers which in turn means, more income. And since it is all online with very little overheads, this means bigger profits!!!

After all, retiring is something that should always be done in style, yet many people don't take this into consideration until it is perhaps a bit too late. In order to retire in a way that suits your lifestyle, you'll want to consider every different option that you have in front of you. Retirement communities are ideal for those who are looking to retire comfortably, and should always be considered the best option for retirement. The following are a few ideas as to why you might want to consider retirement communities.

The quality of care can make or break whether or not one retires in a way that is both enjoyable and comfortable. Many people don't realize this, and thus don't put the right amount of effort into going into a community that offers only the best possible quality of care.

The fact is, retirement communities typically provide the best care that one might expect to get; perfect for those who are discerning.

There's absolutely no reason to spend more than is necessary on retirement. That said, it isn't uncommon for many people to spend a veritable fortune just to retire, which does nothing to help the state of one's bank account. Rather than allowing this to happen, you should always put a fair amount of effort into retiring in a way that will not cost you an arm and a leg, which is why retirement communities are ideal.

The importance of relaxation and peace of mind in retirement is something that should never go overlooked. Yet, many people don't realize just how much stock should be put into this.

So long as you understand that relaxation is key, you'll have a much easier time retiring.

Medical care is something that just about everyone who is retiring will require at one point in time. You need to live in an area that offers the finest in medical care in order to avoid geting more sick than is necessary. On-premises medical care is something that only retirement communities can offer, and should not be overlooked.

If you're concerned about the stress factor of moving into a retirement community, you can rest easy knowing that these moves tend to be a lot less stressful than they are often made out to be. Don't worry about stress; you should retire in a comfortable manner!

Do you want to make friends when retiring? Just about everyone can benefit from having a few close friends in the latter years of their life. Retirement communities provide the perfect opportunity for allowing one to make friends, making it all the more worthwhile for just about anyone to join.

Consider the above when thinking about retirement communities in your area, as it can make or break how you grow old.

The path to personalized cancer treatment

Thursday, March 29, 2012

In the largest study of its kind, researchers have profiled genetic changes in cancer with drug sensitivity in order to develop a personalised approach to cancer treatments. The study is published in Nature on Thursday 29 March 2012.

The team uncovered hundreds of associations between mutations in cancer genes and sensitivity to anticancer drugs. One of the key responses the team found was that cells from a childhood bone cancer, Ewing's sarcoma, respond to a drug that is currently used in the treatment of breast and ovarian cancers. The lowered toxicity of this treatment may mean it is a safer alternative therapy for children and young adults with this aggressive cancer.

There is an intimate relationship between the way a drug works and the genetic changes present in cancers. This study found that sensitivity to most anti-cancer drugs is influenced by mutations in cancer genes and establishes the utility of using large-scale studies to identify these associations and build them into improved patient treatment.

"Our key focus is to find how to use cancer therapeutics in the most effective way by correctly targeting patients that are most likely to respond to a specific therapy," explains Dr Mathew Garnett, first author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "We studied how genetic changes in a panel of >600 cancer cell lines effects responses to 130 anti-cancer drugs, making it the largest study of this type to date."

The team identified biological markers of drug sensitivity to a broad range of cancer drugs. Most of the cancer genes analysed, including those that are not known directs targets of the drugs tested, were associated with either sensitivity or resistance to at least one of the drugs analysed.

"Our research has taken us down unknown paths to find associations that are completely novel," says Dr Cyril Benes, senior author from Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Centre. "We have identified hundreds of associations, many of which we still don't fully understand. We identified a novel indication for the use of PARP inhibitors, anti-cancer drugs currently used to treat breast and ovarian cancers, for the treatment of Ewing's sarcoma."

Ewing's sarcoma is a cancer of children and young adults with a 15% five-year survival rate in patients where the cancer has spread or they have relapsed after chemotherapy. The use of PARP inhibitors could represent a new treatment option for Ewing's sarcoma patients and these compounds will now be tested in clinical trials to assess their therapeutic benefit.

"Advances in next-generation sequencing technologies are already being translated into the large-scale detection of cancer gene mutations in the clinic," says Dr Ultan McDermott, senior author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "There is a compelling need to identify, in a systematic fashion, whether observed mutations affect the likelihood of a patient's response to a given drug treatment. We have therefore developed a unique online open-access resource for the research and medical community that can be used to optimize the clinical application of cancer drugs as well as the design of clinical trials of investigational compounds being developed as treatments."

The team hopes their open-access database will be an important resource for the cancer research community and which will ultimately lead to improved treatments for patients. This research program is a unique Wellcome Trust funded 5-year collaboration between The Cancer Genome Project at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the Center for Molecular Therapeutics, Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center.

"Our work is helping to move cancer therapeutics away from the conventional tissue-based treatment to a more molecular-based treatment," says Professor Daniel Haber, senior author from Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Centre. "The next steps for this collaborative project are to evaluate some of the key findings using tumour samples and test new candidate therapeutic strategies in clinical trials so we can hopefully improve the way we treat cancer patients. We are continuing our screening effort, in particular using drug combinations to discover innovative and better therapeutic options."

Simple Home Improvement Tasks Anyone Can Do : The Wise ...

March 28, 2012 ? Posted in Family?

Perhaps many people are afraid of tackling some home improvement jobs because they feel unqualified to do them. You are an intelligent person who can learn how to do things, and the tools should not be that much of an issue, either.

Your kitchen and baths can be given a partial makeover when you change out fixtures that are not as expensive. We like working with light a lot because you can do so much with it. If you are tired of the mood of the kitchen or any other room, then first consider changing some lights. With lighting, you can replace or strategically add new fixtures to achieve just about any desired effect; in addition, think about what can be done using mirrors. Also, mirrors can be combined with lights to enhance any room, so keep that one in mind.

If you have never thought about what you can do to become more energy efficient, then pay attention. Your hot water system costs you money when the heat content leaves the water while still in your system. For one thing, adjust your hot water temperature regulator so it is not so hot. Once that is done, then shop around for a good thermal insulating material, such as fiberglass, and then insulate your heater. Of course you have to balance how much you spend with the expected time you intend to live at the residence. Think about the dehumidifier operating in your basement, and learn more about this if you have never had one. You always want to keep the basement as dry as possible no matter where you live. The great benefit to keeping your basement dry is so you will not be encouraging the growth of mold. Think about how cool your basement will be during the summertime, so that is another benefit. A dry environment is always best for preserving things, so that can apply to those with basements that are finished.

When was the last time you really gave your home a thorough inspection for damage or age-related wear? You know that caulk is used to seal against the elements or prevent energy or process escape, so it is smart to inspect it. If you have ever taken a close look at your window frames, you have noticed caulk used there. Aged caulking will become brittle due to the drying process, and that is not a good sign. When it starts getting too brittle it will just naturally begin to break and fall out. Re-doing your window caulk is one of the simplest home improvement jobs you can do, and it will not cost a lot, either.

Tons of good home improvement examples are all around your home, and just pay attention. But that really is what many of these projects amount to in the end, and you are taking those measures to secure your home against the elements, wear and tear as well as illegal intrusion. You can find so many different things that are priced for those with a tight budget. Chances are very good you will be able to find something affordable.

If you add antibiotics to your fish tank, it will not just kill the bad ...

An aquarium full of fish is a fun way to experience taking care of your own pets. Fish watching is fun and a very interesting experience so you can share that experience with your guests who?d want to watch them swim around inside the tank. Your fish tank and the fish in it need to be taken cared of and this is a very simple thing to learn. If you don?t want to waste your money and all your efforts in managing your own aquarium then you must learn how to do it properly. If you want to keep your fish alive in your own fish tank then you must set it up properly, this is a bit harder than you may have expected it to be. Fish will be dumping their waste inside the fish bowl or fish tank. In just a short time the manure produced by the fish inside the tank will turn into ammonia that can be toxic to them. Aquarium fishes are in danger every time ammonia is being produced in the tank. The Nitrogen cycle is extremely important to be properly accomplished just before you start placing fish inside your water tank. Many fish will die when the ammonia level in the aquarium is high as the fish excretes in the water. Mother Nature naturally converts the ammonia into nitrates in the nitrogen cycle steps thus tropical fish thrive. The ammonia is eventually converted to nitrites which is the desirable end product for the fish tank. A test kit for aquarium is the best way to monitor the level of nitrogen as accurately as possible for your aquarium.

It?s very important for an aquarium owner to buy the right test kits for their detection of ammonia to be accurate. Nitrogen cycle manipulation and by partially changing the water in the tank with clean water will help in controlling the levels of nitrogen. Patience and time is needed to effectively control the levels of the water?s nitrogen. The duration of the nitrogen cycle in the tank can last between two weeks to two months. A tank without any fish living in it can already be used to start the process for nitrogen cycle. The release of ammonia is a result of decomposition of food that is inside the aquarium. To control the nitrate levels in the water one must test it periodically and change a portion of the water with clean water. Freshwater fish tanks should not be directly added with chlorinated water as the chlorine chemical can kill some bacteria that are beneficial for the fish. Tap water must first be aerated for hours before you add it to your fish tank. Antibiotics that are added to the water in the aquarium also kill the good bacteria. The best way to treat fishes with infection is to separate them and use the antibiotics there. A good and properly cared for fish tank will be a great place for fishes as they are going to live long. You can kill the fish in your tank if you feed it more often than it requires. Changing the water in your aquarium is needed when you notice the water is no longer clear but cloudy.

Use E Cigarettes To Quit Smoking | AHIP's Health Care Plans

Everyone knows the dangers associated with smoking. Numerous warning have been put forth in order to highlight such dangers. Unfortunately, the habit persists with seemingly little or no impact on the users. Warnings including those on cigarette packets seems to have no meaning to one who is addicted to the practice. The introduction of e cigarettes would be part of the efforts towards curbing the habit.

From staunch users, the reasons to justify their habitual tendencies are numerous. They all agree that smoking is both undesirable and harmful to health. It is very unfortunate that smoking is really enslaving and it takes a spirited struggle to come out of it as it affects both mental and physical body parameters.

The introduction of electronic cigarettes is a culmination of long time fight against the habit of smoking. The electronic format comes with such designs as to resemble the actual cigarette. The influential element that is nicotine is intrusively implanted inside its barrel. This element is what captivates the smoker to the habit.

Whether you use electronic cigarette or the real tobacco one, the habitual trends remain the same. The way you hold it on your hand or puff off smoke would remain as with a natural smoker. Electronic cigarettes allows you to quit dangerous smoking effortlessly.

Powered by a miniature lithium cell, electronic alternative were designed such that liquidated nicotine is atomized within its housing cartridge. The solution yields colourless water vapour which has no smell. The smoke, which actually is pure water vapour merely, replaces the real smoke. The vapour quickly vanishes in thin air as if to mimic real smoke.

Users of e cigarettes are not susceptible to any form of danger, including the people nearby. The vapour that comes out as the smokes puffs would only be non toxic water vapour. It does no harm to the environment either. Bad breath that is accustomed with tobacco smokers may not exist anymore.

Find a review of the benefits you get when you use e cigarettes and view our selection of e cig kits, today.

Chile Earthquake 2012: 7.2 Magnitude Quake Strikes Off Coast Of Country

ACCORDING to latest studies on the ever-evolving internet industry, profits from the online video market are seen to grow four-fold by 2020.

Advertisers and marketers in the United Kingdom?s television and broadcast business were surveyed by MTM on how they view the online market in the next 8 years.

More than 77 percent, or three-quarters, expect solid growth in revenues and are optimistic about their overall financial performance.

Presented at the Guardian Changing Media Summit, the results also showed that businesses predict revenues from online ads to grow more than 300 percent by 2020.

On top of this, a study conducted by the Red Bee Media revealed that nearly 60 percent of respondents forecast brand placement advertising-funded programs to emerge as a very important source of profits.

Chief executive officer Bill Patricio said that if the last decade has witnessed the convergence of broadcast networks with broadband, it is possible that the remnants of the coming years will experience a rivalry between changing patterns of consumption and business models steered by consumer demand.

The study also found that more than 70 percent of the respondents are certain that the competition for quality online video content will rise intensely in the coming years.

Patricio emphasized that online media firms will need to put up a good fight and find more innovative ways in the rapidly changing online landscape if they are to take advantage of the market and succeed.

Online empires like YouTube and Google may be among the firms that have the most chance of benefiting in the online video war.

Based on a separate review conducted by eMarketer, online video advertising will have a bigger share of web marketing spending.

The firm predicts the medium to double its revenue share in ad spending to 16 percent in 2016. Online video remains to be the fastest growing advertising format on the internet, with budget allocation increasing by over 50 percent this year.

Meanwhile, a scarcity of quality ads inventory will be the main challenge for online video, but the issue can be easily resolved, if not turned into a benefit.

This was the viewpoint of Video Hub general manager Anthony Risicato, who was special guest during the Bee.TV Executive Forum in Vieques this week.

Risicato said that while online video inventory for premium and quality online ads is limited, television is hounded with the same problem and has turned the issue into an advantage.

Even before a plane takes off, the atmosphere inside the cabin dries out the nose, as the plane ascends the change in air pressure numbs about a third of the taste buds, and at 35,000 feet with cabin humidity levels kept low by design to reduce the risk of fuselage corrosion, xerostomia or cotton mouth sets in. This explain why airlines tend to salt and spice food heavily. Without all that extra kick, food tastes bland. 'Ice cream is about the only thing I can think of that tastes good on a plane,' says Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University. 'Airlines have a problem with food on board. The packaging, freezing, drying and storage are hard on flavor at any altitude, let alone 30,000 feet.' Challenges abound. First food safety standards require all meals to be cooked first on the ground. After that, they are blast-chilled and refrigerated until they can be stacked on carts and loaded on planes. For safety, open-flame grills and ovens aren't allowed on commercial aircraft so attendants must contend with convection ovens that blow hot, dry air over the food. 'Getting any food to taste good on a plane is an elusive goal,' says Steve Gundrum, who runs a company that develops new products for the food industry."<p><div class="share_submission" style="position:relative;"> <a class="slashpop" href="http://twitter.com/home?status=Science+Reveals+Why+Airplane+Food+Tastes+So+Bad%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FGQJjR1"><img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"></a> <a class="slashpop" href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fscience.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F12%2F03%2F26%2F1420254%2Fscience-reveals-why-airplane-food-tastes-so-bad%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfacebook"><img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"></a> <a class="nobg" href="http://plus.google.com/share?url=http://science.slashdot.org/story/12/03/26/1420254/science-reveals-why-airplane-food-tastes-so-bad?utm_source=slashdot&amp;utm_medium=googleplus" onclick="javascript:window.open(this.href,'', 'menubar=no,toolbar=no,resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes,height=600,width=600');return false;"><img src="http://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/gplus-16.png" alt="Share on Google+"/></a> </div></p><p><a href="http://science.slashdot.org/story/12/03/26/1420254/science-reveals-why-airplane-food-tastes-so-bad?utm_source=rss1.0moreanon&amp;utm_medium=feed">Read more of this story</a> at Slashdot.</p>samzenpus2012-03-26T15:03:00+00:00sciencefly-the-tasteless-skies

This time it is getting even more attention and buzz than it normally would. Amateur astronomer Wayne Jaeschke of West Chester Pennsylvania noticed an unusual protrusion in the planet's southern hemisphere, preceding the sunrise terminator. Several things may have contributed to this strange 'cloud formation.' One possibility is a meteoric impact event, where dust was spewed up into the atmosphere. Another could be a major dust storm, which are typical on Mars. While the other possibility is the more mundane, that these observations were caused by a mere optical illusion via a type of glint that occurred due to having just the right combination of lighting and atmospheric conditions. Some suggest volcanic activity, though this is unlikely given it has been 20 to 200 million years since lava has flowed on Mars."<p><div class="share_submission" style="position:relative;"> <a class="slashpop" href="http://twitter.com/home?status=Amateur+Astronomer+Spots+Strange+Cloud+Formations+On+Mars%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FGQ5qRp"><img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"></a> <a class="slashpop" href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fscience.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F12%2F03%2F25%2F1351201%2Famateur-astronomer-spots-strange-cloud-formations-on-mars%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfacebook"><img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"></a> <a class="nobg" href="http://plus.google.com/share?url=http://science.slashdot.org/story/12/03/25/1351201/amateur-astronomer-spots-strange-cloud-formations-on-mars?utm_source=slashdot&amp;utm_medium=googleplus" onclick="javascript:window.open(this.href,'', 'menubar=no,toolbar=no,resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes,height=600,width=600');return false;"><img src="http://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/gplus-16.png" alt="Share on Google+"/></a> </div></p><p><a href="http://science.slashdot.org/story/12/03/25/1351201/amateur-astronomer-spots-strange-cloud-formations-on-mars?utm_source=rss1.0moreanon&amp;utm_medium=feed">Read more of this story</a> at Slashdot.</p>timothy2012-03-25T14:58:00+00:00marshe-loves-it

The six crew members were told to take shelter late Friday in their Soyuz capsules after it was determined there was a small possibility the debris could hit the station, the U.S. space agency said in a statement." This isn't the first time it's happened, either. They found that other alcoholic drinks also worked--white wine, beer, sake and so on &mdash; but red wine was by far the best. The question, of course, is why. What is it about red wine that does the trick? Today, these guys provide an answer, at least in part. Keita Deguchi at the National Institute for Materials Science in Tsukuba, Japan, and a few buddies, say the mystery ingredient is tartaric acid and have the experimental data to show that it plays an important role in the process. . . It turns out that the best performer is a wine made from the gamay grape--for the connoisseurs, that's a 2009 Beajoulais from the Paul Beaudet winery in central France.'"<p><div class="share_submission" style="position:relative;"> <a class="slashpop" href="http://twitter.com/home?status=Red+Wine+and+the+Secret+of+Superconductivity%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FGMxtre"><img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"></a> <a class="slashpop" href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fscience.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F12%2F03%2F24%2F2142200%2Fred-wine-and-the-secret-of-superconductivity%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfacebook"><img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"></a> <a class="nobg" href="http://plus.google.com/share?url=http://science.slashdot.org/story/12/03/24/2142200/red-wine-and-the-secret-of-superconductivity?utm_source=slashdot&amp;utm_medium=googleplus" onclick="javascript:window.open(this.href,'', 'menubar=no,toolbar=no,resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes,height=600,width=600');return false;"><img src="http://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/gplus-16.png" alt="Share on Google+"/></a> </div></p><p><a href="http://science.slashdot.org/story/12/03/24/2142200/red-wine-and-the-secret-of-superconductivity?utm_source=rss1.0moreanon&amp;utm_medium=feed">Read more of this story</a> at Slashdot.</p>timothy2012-03-24T21:43:00+00:00japanjust-ask-bender

Early Exposure To Germs Has Lasting Benefitshttp://science.slashdot.org/story/12/03/23/2151256/early-exposure-to-germs-has-lasting-benefits?utm_source=rss1.0mainlinkanon&utm_medium=feed ananyo writes "Exposure to germs in childhood is thought to help strengthen the immune system and protect children from developing allergies and asthma, but the pathways by which this occurs have been unclear. Now, researchers have identified a mechanism in mice that may explain the role of exposure to microbes in the development of asthma and ulcerative colitis, a common form of inflammatory bowel disease. The researchers show that in mice, exposure to microbes in early life can reduce the body's inventory of invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells, which help to fight infection but can also turn on the body, causing a range of disorders such as asthma or inflammatory bowel disease (abstract). The study supports the 'hygiene hypothesis,' which contends that such auto-immune diseases are more common in the developed world where the prevalence of antibiotics and antibacterials reduce children's exposure to microbes."<p><div class="share_submission" style="position:relative;"> <a class="slashpop" href="http://twitter.com/home?status=Early+Exposure+To+Germs+Has+Lasting+Benefits%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FGLaPJs"><img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"></a> <a class="slashpop" href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fscience.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F12%2F03%2F23%2F2151256%2Fearly-exposure-to-germs-has-lasting-benefits%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfacebook"><img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"></a> <a class="nobg" href="http://plus.google.com/share?url=http://science.slashdot.org/story/12/03/23/2151256/early-exposure-to-germs-has-lasting-benefits?utm_source=slashdot&amp;utm_medium=googleplus" onclick="javascript:window.open(this.href,'', 'menubar=no,toolbar=no,resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes,height=600,width=600');return false;"><img src="http://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/gplus-16.png" alt="Share on Google+"/></a> </div></p><p><a href="http://science.slashdot.org/story/12/03/23/2151256/early-exposure-to-germs-has-lasting-benefits?utm_source=rss1.0moreanon&amp;utm_medium=feed">Read more of this story</a> at Slashdot.</p>Soulskill2012-03-23T22:32:00+00:00medicinegift-that-keeps-on-giving

While he's still deciding exactly what he wants to work on, he told us that he'd quite like to do a sandbox space trading game like Elite, 'except done right.' Notch is aiming for something with a bit more character than the classic trading sim. Instead of being the spaceship, you'd be a character inside the spaceship. 'I want the space game that's more like Firefly,' he said. 'I want to run around on my ship and have to put out a fire. Like, oh crap, the cooling system failed, I have to put out the fire here.' He hasn't decided to make the game yet, and doesn't mind if someone else takes up the reins. 'If someone steals the idea before me, that's totally fine. From the article: 'The researchers first identified a specific set of brain cells in the hippocampus that were active only when a mouse was learning about a new environment. They determined which genes were activated in those cells, and coupled them with the gene for channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2), a light-activated protein used in optogenetics. ... The light-activated protein would only be expressed in the neurons involved in experiential learning &mdash; an ingenious way to allow for labeling of the physical network of neurons associated with a specific memory engram for a specific experience. Finally, the mice entered an environment and, after a few minutes of exploration, received a mild foot shock, learning to fear the particular environment in which the shock occurred. The brain cells activated during this fear conditioning became tagged with ChR2. Later, when exposed to triggering pulses of light in a completely different environment, the neurons involved in the fear memory switched on &mdash; and the mice quickly entered a defensive, immobile crouch.'"<p><div class="share_submission" style="position:relative;"> <a class="slashpop" href="http://twitter.com/home?status=Researchers+Tweak+Mouse+Neurons+To+Activate+Specific+Memories%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FGRucGH"><img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"></a> <a class="slashpop" href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fscience.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F12%2F03%2F23%2F1811232%2Fresearchers-tweak-mouse-neurons-to-activate-specific-memories%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfacebook"><img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"></a> <a class="nobg" href="http://plus.google.com/share?url=http://science.slashdot.org/story/12/03/23/1811232/researchers-tweak-mouse-neurons-to-activate-specific-memories?utm_source=slashdot&amp;utm_medium=googleplus" onclick="javascript:window.open(this.href,'', 'menubar=no,toolbar=no,resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes,height=600,width=600');return false;"><img src="http://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/gplus-16.png" alt="Share on Google+"/></a> </div></p><p><a href="http://science.slashdot.org/story/12/03/23/1811232/researchers-tweak-mouse-neurons-to-activate-specific-memories?utm_source=rss1.0moreanon&amp;utm_medium=feed">Read more of this story</a> at Slashdot.</p>Soulskill2012-03-23T18:24:00+00:00biotechshine-a-laser-in-your-brain-to-find-your-keys

Do Women Make Better Bosses?http://science.slashdot.org/story/12/03/23/1419243/do-women-make-better-bosses?utm_source=rss1.0mainlinkanon&utm_medium=feed Hugh Pickens writes "David Mielach reports on a new study which finds that women in management positions lead in a more democratic way, allowing employees to participate in decision-making and establishing interpersonal channels of communication. 'In line with known gender differences in individual leadership, we find that in workplaces with more women managers, more individualized employee feedback is carried out,' says study author Eduardo Melero. 'Likewise, we can see evidence, although weaker, that in these workplaces decisions are made more democratically and more interpersonal channels of communications are established.' The research was based on data from the Workplace Employment Relationships Survey, a survey of workplaces in the United Kingdom. Melero analyzed this data by looking at the number of women in management positions in companies and the leadership tactics employed at those companies. He found increased communication between management and employees in companies with women in management positions led to more well-informed decisions, since employee feedback will be utilized in the decision-making process. Still, correlation does not equal causation.
